Free Pub Quiz Round: 10 Food and Drink Questions and Answers

Here is a complete pub quiz round, free to use at your own quiz night. Ten food and drink questions with the answers underneath, pulled straight out of our archive and given a fresh proof-read before it went up.

This is a real round. It ran in a real pub, in front of real teams, and it works. Print it, read it out, and you have ten minutes of your night covered.

How to use this round

A few things worth doing before you read it out:

• Read each question twice. Once for the room, once for the bloke who was at the bar.
• Don't rush. The gap between questions is where the banter happens, and the banter is why they came.
• Print the questions, not the answers. Scroll down to the answers only when you are marking.
• One point per question. Ten questions, ten points, no half marks in this one.

The difficulty is mixed on purpose. There are two or three that most teams will get, a middle chunk that separates them, and a couple that only the strong tables will land. That spread is the whole game, a round where everyone scores two out of ten is demoralising, and a round where everyone scores nine is pointless.

9. At 2,693,000 Scoville units, which is the hottest chilli in the world — the Ghost Pepper, the Carolina Reaper or Pepper X?
10. A Negroni is one part Campari, one part vermouth rosso, and one part what?

The answers

1. It has live maggots in it. Casu Marzu is a Sardinian sheep's-milk cheese deliberately left for cheese flies to lay eggs in. Accept anything along the lines of "maggots" or "insect larvae".
2. Tea. Water beats it, but water isn't manufactured.
3. Cakes. A 1991 VAT tribunal ruled them cakes rather than biscuits, which is why they are not taxed like a chocolate biscuit.
4. Marseille.
5. The Hairy Bikers.
6. A Harvey Wallbanger.
7. Munich, for Oktoberfest. Somebody will always argue for Slough.
8. Milk Tray. The Cadbury's Milk Tray man, and half the room will do the theme tune for you.
9. Pepper X. Guinness World Records certified it in October 2023 at an average of 2,693,000 SHU, roughly three times the Carolina Reaper it replaced.
10. Gin.

Which ones will separate the teams

From running this round, here is roughly how it lands:

• Nearly everyone gets: the Hairy Bikers, Milk Tray, and Jaffa Cakes.
• The middle of the table: Marseille, Munich, and the Harvey Wallbanger.
• Only the strong teams: Casu Marzu, Pepper X, and the Negroni.

If your teams are on the casual side, question nine is the one to drop. If they are sharp, leave it in — the Scoville number in the question is a genuine clue for anyone who follows that sort of thing.

How many questions should a pub quiz round have?

Ten. Fifteen is too many and the room starts to drift. Ten questions, one point each, then move on.

How hard should the questions be?

Mix the difficulty inside the round rather than making a whole round hard. Aim for the strong teams to get eight or nine and the casual teams to get four or five. A quiz should make people feel clever, not thick.
